Cancer Care Overview & Patient Experience

This project used patient journey maps to illustrate the cancer care experiences of Asian American patients across the continuum of care. Journey maps are a data visualization technique widely used in human-centered design (HCD) to show how individuals move through services, systems, decisions, and experiences over time.

Using secondary data from multiple sources, the project mapped key stages of the cancer care journey, including interactions with providers, treatment decisions, supportive care needs, and the clinical, emotional, cultural, and systemic factors that shape patient experiences. Cancer care is particularly well suited to this approach because it is longitudinal, complex, and often involves multiple stages and points of interaction across the healthcare system.

The resulting journey maps help synthesize existing evidence in a way that preserves the sequence and context of patient experiences. The findings can support empathy-building, interdisciplinary sensemaking, and future ideation to inform potential solutions aimed at improving cancer care experiences for Asian American patients.
